General Electric is to build five solar power plants in Nigeria; to be located in Borno, Kebbi, Nassarawa, Niger and Taraba States which each of the plants expected to generate 100 megawatts of electricity totaling 500 megawatts across the 5 States. The electricity is meant to stimulate economic activities and social services in the affected States through boosting agricultural food processing, small scale businesses in addition to supplying electricity to schools and hospitals.

French Giant Total To Install PV Solar Panels In 5,000 Service Stations Globally

Total is launching a program to equip 5,000 of its service stations worldwide with solar panels within five years, including 800 in France. The total solar capacity to be installed is about 200 MW, equivalent to the amount of electricity used to power a city of 200,000 people. The project represents an investment of around $300 million and is projected to cut the company’s carbon emissions by 100,000 tonnes annually and reduce energy costs by $40m each year. It’s a high-profile move in what it sees as a growth sector, highlighting a greater industry focus on renewables.

Growing Stronger: Wind Energy Can Supply 20% Of Global Electricity By 2030

A new report states that by 2030 wind power could reach 2,110 GW, and supply up to 20% of global electricity, creating 2.4 million new jobs and reducing CO2 emissions by more than 3.3 billion tonnes per year, and attract annual investment of about €200 billion. With dramatic price decreases in recent years for wind, solar and other renewables, a decarbonised power sector is not only technically feasible but is economically competitive as well. New markets are developing rapidly across Africa, Asia and Latin America, supplying clean energy to support sustainable development.

Car Parks Of The Future? New European Airport Uses Trina Solar PV Modules

The international Airport Weeze in North Rhine-Westphalia is one of the newest European airports, welcoming 1.8m passengers a year. The airport operators have now opened car park P2 for customers and equipped it with a PV carport system. This offers a dual advantage. First, the renewable energy generated by the system can be used as an additional revenue source, or for self-consumption; whilst reducing its carbon footprint. Second, the system also serves as a protective layer shielding passenger vehicles.

Credit Suisse And SolarCity Create New Fund To Finance $300m In Solar Projects

SolarCity Corp. has announced that it has created a new fund to finance more than $300 million in solar projects with Credit Suisse. The fourth such collaboration between SolarCity and Credit Suisse will allow thousands of homeowners in the U.S. to pay less for solar electricity than they pay for utility bills. The fund represents another new financing for SolarCity, following a $305 million cash equity financing and a fund to finance $347 million in projects with Citi that closed last month.

d.light Raises $22m To Expand Its PayGo Business Into New Off-Grid Solar Markets

d.light has announced it has secured $22.5 million in financing to grow its PayGo business globally and support its mission of providing solar energy solutions for households and small businesses around the world, transforming the way off-grid families use and pay for power. The company raised $15 million in Series D equity from KawiSafi Ventures Fund, Energy Access Ventures, Omidyar Network and NewQuest Capital Partners. Debt funding of $2.5 million was also raised through SunFunder.

General Motors Commits to 100 Percent Renewable Energy by 2050

General Motors plans to generate or source all electrical power for its 350 operations in 59 countries with 100 percent renewable energy — such as wind, sun, and landfill gas — by 2050. “Establishing a 100 percent renewable energy goal helps us better serve society by reducing environmental impact,” said GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra. “This pursuit of renewable energy benefits our customers and communities through cleaner air while strengthening our business through lower and more stable energy costs.”

Electric Mobility: In Germany, Baden-Württemberg Drives Technological Change

Suppliers to the automobile industry can challenge major manufacturers, but they face significant pressures, recently illustrated by the dispute between Volkswagen and Prevent Group. The federal state of Baden-Württemberg has now launched an advisory campaign to help medium-sized suppliers in the automobile industry to diversify into parts for electric vehicles. The aim is to help the 1,000 or more suppliers to gain a foothold in the market for systems and components in the electric mobility sector.

Electricity Generation From Renewables Hits All Time High In The US.

Continuing to defy projections; wind, solar, and other renewable energy sources have set a series of records for domestic electrical generation during the first half of 2016. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s (EIA); net U.S. electrical generation from non-hydro utility-scale renewables (i.e., biomass, geothermal, solar, wind) increased by 17.0% compared to the first half of 2015. The output from conventional hydropower also rose by 11.8%. Combined, generation from all utility-scale renewable sources increased by 14.5%.

Norway’s Asko And Scania Trucks Test Hydrogen Propulsion Power From Solar Cells

Asko, which is Norway’s largest convenience goods wholesaler, is continuing its investment in sustainable transport services. The company will together with Scania start testing trucks with an electric powertrain. Electrical energy is converted from hydrogen gas in fuel cells on board the vehicles. The hydrogen gas is produced locally, using solar cells. The trucks will run in distribution service with distances of almost 500 km. Asko’s ambition is to achieve a climate-neutral business, where the distribution of goods will take place using trucks, which run on renewable fuels and in the longer term completely on electricity.
