SMA has announced that it sold more than 1GW of solar inverters into all market segments in India in 2017. SMA inverter sales in the commercial sector have doubled compared to last year, corresponding to a market share of 30%. In total, the installed SMA inverter base in India exceeds 3 gigawatts. “India is one of the key markets for SMA in the Asia Pacific region. In the last 3 years, we have seen strong commitment from the Indian government driving growing market demand in the solar sector”.

Volkswagen Strongly Commits To E-Mobility And Digitalisation, Investing €34 Bn

The Volkswagen Group has made a major announcement regarding its strategic goals until 2025. By the end of 2022: more than €34 billion is planned for the development of e-mobility, autonomous driving, new mobility services and digitalisation. Financial markets reacted positively to the Group’s strategic focus and Volkswagen’s share price were back at the pre-crisis levels. CEO Matthias Müller stated “We are reinventing the car. To achieve that, we are making targeted investments to provide the necessary funds from our own resources.” The Group has said it would electrify its entire model portfolio by 2030.

FutureLearn, InnoEnergy Team Up On Clean Energy, Smart Grids, Blockchain And PV

FutureLearn, the leading social learning platform, has announced a new partnership with InnoEnergy, Europe’s sustainable energy engine supported by the EIT. The partnership will see InnoEnergy host a range of new online education courses in the sustainable energy sector, including blockchain technology, smart grids and solar photovoltaics, on the FutureLearn platform. The massive open online courses (MOOCs) are aimed at cleantech industry professionals, and members of the public can also register. Designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills required to develop new innovations in sustainable energy, the first courses are focused on a range of topics that are set to dominate the innovation agenda over the next few years, including blockchain, smart grids for smart cities and the business potential of solar photovoltaics.

EV Boost: BMW, Porsche, VW, Ford Launch Pan-European High-Power Charging Network

Electric vehicles and e-mobility received a major boost with BMW Group, Daimler AG, Ford Motor Company, the Volkswagen Group, Audi and Porsche announcing a joint venture IONITY, that will develop and implement a High-Power Charging (HPC) network for electric vehicles across Europe. Launching approximately 400 HPC stations by 2020, IONITY will make long-distance journeys easier and marks an significant step forward for electric vehicles and the electric highway revolution. The network will use the European charging standard Combined Charging System.

EV Infrastructure: Iceland Leads The Way, With Fast Chargers On Main Highway

ON Power, a part of Reykjavik Energy, has signed a contract with ABB for the delivery and installation of 15 Terra multi-standard DC chargers type 53 CJG at various points along Iceland’s main highway. Today there are over 1,400 electric vehicles on the road in Iceland due to a state-financed incentive program, which supports the purchase of electric vehicles. The tender for fast chargers is part of the country’s campaign to promote and expand Iceland’s e-mobility strategy by increasing the availability of flexible and robust charging stations along central locations of the national highway across the entire country.

Dubai’s Transformation Into Smart City Under Way, Using New Technolgy From ABB

ABB technology is supporting the development of new smart solar power systems for the city of Dubai, UAE. Dubai Electric & Water Authority (DEWA) is using the ABB AbilityTM Electrical Distribution Control System to help develop data-driven strategies that maximize year-round solar energy production as part of the Smart Dubai initiative. “We seek to promote Dubai as a smart, sustainable, and integrated city with a high-tech infrastructure to support social and economic development, as well as promote sustainable use of resources by ensuring best practices in consumption, efficiency and governance,” said his Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.

Construction Starts On Horns Rev 3, Denmark’s Largest Offshore Wind Farm

Construction is commencing on Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm, the 406 MW Horns Rev 3. Vattenfall won the contract for its construction in 2015 and is installing the first of a total of 49 foundations in the North Sea. It is the first time in five years that an offshore wind farm will be built in Denmark and when Horns Rev 3 is complete, it will provide enough power to satisfy the annual electricity consumption of 425,000 Danish households. The 8.3 MW turbines are 187 metres high and have a rotor diameter of 164 metres. They are manufactured by MHI Vestas and are today one of the world’s most powerful wind turbines.

EDF Completes Blythe Installation Of Potent New Turbines, Powering 34,000 Homes

The Blyth Offshore Demonstrator project will produce enough low-carbon electricity to power approximately 34,000 UK households, using 8.0MW wind turbines with a power mode uprating them to 8.3MW. It will save around 57,600 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year and is the first offshore wind project to connect using 66kv rated cables. It’s also the first time that a “float and submerge” gravity-based foundation (GBF) has been used for offshore wind turbines. Each GBF is made up of more than 1,800m3 of concrete and weighs over 15,000 tonnes when fully installed on the seabed, and the structures have a total height of around 60 metres from the base to the access platform.

GE Renewable Energy Unveils Its Largest Onshore Wind Turbine

GE Renewable Energy has unveiled its brand-new 4.8–158 onshore wind turbine, equipped with a 158-meter rotor and a range of tip heights up to 240 meters. The combination of a larger rotor and tall towers enables the turbine to take advantage of higher wind speeds and produce more energy. The latest turbine also features high tech blades, improved loads and controls, and taller, more cost-effective towers. The innovative features have been developed in close partnerships with LM Wind Power, Blade Dynamics and GE’s Global Research Center.

Methanol ‘Green’ Fuel Cell Has Potential To Transform Large Scale Transport

Earlier this week, the MS innogy commenced operations for green tours on the beautiful Lake Baldeneysee. The passenger vessel, is the first in Germany to be powered by methanol fuel cells, is a part of innogy’s “greenfuel” project where they demonstrate the entire value chain of environmentally friendly methanol, from a green production of methanol using CO2 from the surrounding air, green electricity, and water, to the use of methanol as a fuel in the excursion vessel and in cars, ships, and aircraft. The demonstration took place in Essen – this year’s “Green Capital of Europe” and went hand in hand with the ambitious transition the city is undergoing in reinventing itself as a “Green City”.

Paradigm Shift For Fueling Transportation? Innogy Presents Alternative To Oil

The energy revolution is now also picking up speed in transportation. In the “Green Capital of Europe-Essen 2017”, MS innogy was christened and put into operation as a regular passenger vessel. It’s powered by an environmentally friendly methanol fuel cell. The energy required for the whole operation comes entirely from renewables. Peter Terium, CEO, innogy SE said – “with MS innogy we are enabling people to experience the energy revolution directly; show in a very practical way what a clean energy future without oil could look like. We can do this by producing green fuels such as methanol with renewable energy and using them to drive environmentally friendly ships, aircraft and heavy goods transport”
