35% Of German Electricity Consumption Now From Renewables: Grid Challenges Ahead

The Centre for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research in Baden-Württemberg (ZSW) and the German Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW) have stated in an initial assessment that electricity generated from clean energy accounted for 35% of Germany’s consumption in 1H 2017. It’s the first time that this mark has been reached. The total share of electricity generated from renewables was up 2% from last year. The growth from onshore wind was 13.6%; offshore wind saw the steepest growth at 47.5%; growth from biomass increased by 2.2%, whilst the growth from PV systems was 13.5%, compared with the 1H 2016.

Invenergy, GE Renewable Energy Announce 2GW Facility: Largest Wind Farm In US

Invenergy and GE Renewable Energy have announced a 2GW wind farm that will be the largest in the U.S. and second-largest in the world, once operational, in 2020. The Wind Catcher facility is under construction in the Oklahoma panhandle and will use 800 state-of-the-art GE 2.5 MW turbines. It will link more than 1.1 million customers with wind energy harvested domestically, saving them more than $7 billion, and will support 4,000 direct and 4,400 indirect jobs annually during construction and 80 permanent jobs once operational. “Wind Catcher shows American leadership in bringing low-cost clean energy to market at Giga scale,” said Invenergy’s Founder and CEO Michael Polsky.

New BNEF Report Highlights A Massive Shift to Wind And Solar, While Coal Fades

A new independent report from Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) states that clean energy such as wind and solar will account for almost 75% of investment in power generation worldwide, between now and 2014. New Energy Outlook 2017 estimates that overall $10.2 trillion will be spent on power generation technology in the next 22 years, with $7.4 trillion being spent on renewables. This year’s forecast sees solar energy costs dropping a further 66% by 2040, and onshore wind by 47%, with renewables undercutting the majority of existing fossil power stations by 2030.

NRG Systems And RK Systems To Commission India’s Tallest Lattice Met Tower

RK Systems created the 150m tower for one of India’s leading clean energy Independent Power Producers. The decision to commission the tower was spurred by the growing proliferation of taller turbines. The company overcame a number of design challenges to erect the 150m tower. To keep the tower stable, secure, and under the 250kg weight limit, a design was introduced, that used square tubes – a first in India. According to Arun Mehra, Director of RK Systems, “In response to the increase in hub heights, and in order to perform accurate resource assessment campaigns that reduce uncertainty, it has become necessary to capture data at these heights.”

Vestas Seals Massive 557 MW Fleet-Wide Service Deal in Australia with Infigen

Infigen Energy and Vestas have signed fleet-wide long-term service agreements for 557 MW of Vestas and Suzlon turbines. With the deal, Vestas will provide maintenance to Infigen’s entire operating fleet until the end of their design life, including all their Suzlon turbines.
The agreements are effective from 1 January 2018 for a period of between 7 and 15 years, depending on the wind park. “Vestas has a proven track record, developed over many years, for delivering high-quality service and optimal asset performance”, said Ross Rolfe, Infigen’s Managing Director.

US: Clean Energy Now Providing More Electricity Than Nuclear For The First Time

The latest issue of the U.S. Energy Information’s (EIA) “Electric Power Monthly” reveals that – for the first time since the beginning of the nuclear era – renewable energy sources are now providing a greater share of the nation’s electrical generation than nuclear power. “Renewable energy is now surpassing nuclear power, a major milestone in the transformation of the U.S. energy sector,” said Tim Judson, Executive Director of the NIRS. “This gulf will only widen over the next several years, with continued strong growth of renewables and the planned retirement of at least 7% of nuclear capacity by 2025.

Wind Power Can Provide Energy On Coldest Days: Met Office, Imperial College

A new study by climate scientists has advanced the understanding of the potential for wind power to provide energy during the coldest spells of winter weather. The team, which involved scientists from the Met Office Hadley Centre, Imperial College London and the University of Reading, compared wind power availability with electricity demand in winter and they found an interesting result. The team found that during the highest 5% of energy demand days, one-third produce more wind power than the winter average. “The very coldest days are associated with a mix of different weather patterns, some of which produce high winds in parts of the UK.

Vestas Strides Onwards, Winning 90 MW Order For The Largest Wind Park In Greece

Vestas increased its presence in southern Europe with an order for 90 MW of V136-3.45 MW turbines from Eltech Anemos S.A. places, delivered in 3.6 MW Power Optimised Mode. The wind park will be the largest in Greece and the first in the country featuring the V136-3.45 MW. The contract comprises supply and installation of the wind turbines as well as a 20-year Active Output Management 4000 (AOM4000) service agreement to optimise energy output at all times. Delivery of the wind turbines is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2018.

Nordex Scores Triple Win In France, Also Installs Largest Turbine To Date

The Nordex Group has been awarded three new contracts covering a total capacity of 36 megawatts in France. Different project developers and power station operators have placed orders for the installation of a total of 13 N131/3000, N117/3000 and N117/2400 turbines. The company will be installing its N131/3000 turbine in France for the first time. With a rotor diameter of 131 metres, it will be the largest turbine installed in France to date. The turbine will be able to generate large energy yields even in light wind regions and fits perfectly to the site conditions thanks to its very low acoustic output levels. With an installed capacity of over 1.7 GW, Nordex is one of the market leaders in France, servicing its customers’ wind power systems via a dense network of 15 service stations. Work on the wind farms is to commence this year.

Vestas has opened an engineering design centre in Porto, Portugal, to further strengthen its global research and development setup, further strengthening its industry-leading investments in research and development. The centre will be responsible for developing core technology for Vestas’ product portfolio and is part of Vestas’ existing research and development (R&D) setup, which includes sites in the UK, Norway, Germany, India and the company headquarters in Aarhus, Denmark.
